My composition MU was composed in 1967 in New York City for a concert in the Juilliard School of Music auditorium for students of Stanley Wolfe’s Extension Division composition class. I used a form of score that I had invented where each of the two players proceeded at a fairly equal pace visually on their own path and then synchronized at meeting points. I named the composition MU for the “multiple unit” passenger trains operating in New Jersey, referred to as “MUs.” I had been riding one of the old original red passenger cars of the Pennsylvania Railroad out to the town of Princeton when I conceived of the piece.
